UNESCO World Heritage

The culmination of a project started in 2005, FADO is about to be formally entered as a candidate for potential inclusion in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

PORTUGAL

The Nobel Prize winning writer José Saramago has died on the 18th of June at the age of 87 in Lanzarote where he lived for the last ten years of his life.  Some of his ideas were not embraced by all sections of Portuguese society.  He was best known to many in Britain for his participation - over 20 years ago - in the BBC language course "Discovering Portuguese".
