INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

As was confidently expected - following a meticulous application process - Fado has been inscribed in UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.  Alongside Mexican Mariachi music, Equitation in the French tradition ^ ^, and several other candidates, Fado joins a growing list which already included the Tango and Flamenco music.  Time will tell whether this accolade will «raise awareness about its importance» (we don't have awareness data for Albanian Folk Iso-Polyphony, inscribed in 2008, and possibly in urgent need of protection), yet hopefully it should continue to provide impetus to the many educational and cultural initiatives described in the Nomination Form.  UNESCO
